While the pair will meet at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena on Sunday (AEST), the fight comes three years after it was first touted and with Canelo (27) having taken questionable fights against Amir Khan, Liam Smith and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as Golovkin (35) impatiently waited, all the while growing older. GGG’s last fight was a close decision win over Danny Jacobs, which broke a streak of 23 knockout wins stretching back to 2008 and provided fodder to those who believe his powers may be waning.

Writing for Yahoo Sports, veteran fight writer Kevin Iole said the fight had the potential to rival Hagler-Hearns but there was smoke when it came to the question of Canelo’s management, namely Golden Boy boss Oscar De La Hoya, ducking Golovkin’s prime. If it proves the case that Canelo faces a fading GGG, Iole wrote, boxing will have missed out on a monumental battle.

“De La Hoya clearly chose to allow Golovkin-Alvarez to marinate. If they’d fought in 2016, they might be on the verge of a mega-millions rematch by now, but that’s not the road De La Hoya chose,” Iole wrote.

“And it annoyed Golovkin to no end. Often, a fighter will without justification accuse a potential opponent of ducking him. Golovkin, though, exonerated Alvarez and accused De La Hoya of being the one to orchestrate the ducking.

“If it’s a great fight, even a poor man’s version of Hagler-Hearns, all will be forgiven and no one again will mention De La Hoya’s choice to let the bout marinate.

“But if, as some suggest, Golovkin’s performance in his last fight against Daniel Jacobs is the beginning of some sort of decline at age 35, then the boxing world will forever rue what might have been.”

Iole branded “highly unlikely” a suggestion from Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez “that Golovkin took his foot off the gas against Jacobs, so to speak, to entice De La Hoya to the negotiating table”. Yet both GGG and Sanchez are teasing the line that Golovkin only got Canelo after looking vulnerable against Jacobs – perhaps sacrificing his KO streak to lure his rival, with an opportunistic Golden Boy smelling blood.

“Boxing is a business,” Golovkin said, per ESPN. “If I look great against Jacobs – if I knocked him out – I would not be getting this fight with Canelo now.”Watch Now
