Roger Federer once again headlines the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, with the legendary Swiss superstar targeting a ninth title in the German city in 2017. Federer has dominated Halle over the better part of the last decade, winning his first title all the way back in 2003 and claiming his last piece of silverware in 2015, while he’s also finished as runner-up on two other occasions.
Federer, who skipped the entire clay season and was defeated by Tommy Haas (who has received a wildcard in Halle) in his return to action in Stuttgart last week, was knocked out in the semi-finals last year in Halle by rising star Alexander Zverev, who has since sky-rocketed up the rankings to hold a place in the top 10.

Zverev also returns to Halle in 2017 and he will be hoping to go one step further than last year, when he beat Federer but lost in the final to veteran compatriot Florian Mayer, who is also back in Halle to defend his title.
Stiff competition awaits the German pair however, with top 10 stars Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem also lining up at the 2017 Gerry Weber Open. Nishikori has never really shone on grass and there’s still question marks surrounding his often-fragile body, while Thiem will be targeting another title after enjoying a stellar clay season which culminated in a second straight semi-final run at the French Open. Thiem also beat Federer on grass in Stuttgart last year.
